Mississipi Lawmakers Propose Banning Fat People From Restaurants (UPDATED)

Via Junkfood Science and Feministe, a few Mississippi legislators have proposed the following law:
Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management established under Section 41-101-1 or its successor. The State Department of Health shall prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese, and shall provide those materials to all food establishments to which this section applies.

This is the second place that I've seen this today. These are fast food industry front groups behind this are Steve Malloy fired from FOX for taking money for his views. Here's the one reply with links and here's the other that Songbird caught as the CCF fraud. One details the wench who spreads this separately.
The corporate control of food information in America is managed to a crumb sized detail. When you read these try to google "sourcewatch" along with the website or the named groups or individuals and dollars to donuts they trace to Rick Berman PR or one of the websites he and his PR team created or run.
If it sounds too stupid to be true and its not from Ann Coulter's mouth, think PR scam. It's not always since legislators can be really dippy, but the food legislation is micro managed to the States and PR spinners lie.

It's good to have a shortcut to get right to something useful. So much hunting has given me a few easyier routes. The other good watch reports are Corp Watch who tend to do corporate profiles and are broken down more by events so for example Halliburton plus CorpWatch would need Iraq or something more specific to get the low down on that, Halliburton Iraq in a nutshell.
GMWatch tracks the fronts, frauds and scammers in the genetically altered foods so their name plus a group will tell you if industry money is behind it or the individual quoted is a paid spokesman. In addition PR Watch is affiliated with Sourcewatch and Congresspedia following more of the scammers on the political side. It's helpful when the web makes it so easy to hide who's who.
Sunlight Foundation is another awesome group that has a nice list they call insanely useful sites.

Maybe the restauranteurs are afraid the folks with adipose tissue will break their chairs. Are these all buffet style restaurants? Maybe the profit margin will be affected if people of size eat at the buffets.
It is a silly waste of taxpayer funds to sponsor such a bill.

You laugh, but it's actually been a problem on the DC Metro. I've personally seen one of the handicapped seats fail under load, and the newest cars have a solid aluminum beam under those seats for reinforcement, I was surprised to note.

Doesn't he realize how this bill opens up restaurants to lawsuits? I can see it now - the bill implies that restaurants contribute to obesity because it limits access by overweight (however that will be defined) people. So if they are regular patrons,....

Mostly she was a pathological liar, pretended to be a Native American but is an heiress to an oil fortune. Her last hurrahs here included memorable fireworks with me and others, but I was and continue to be a favorite target.
She posts at other places around the web under other names, generally attacks me and others for criticizing the gmo crops. Since some of the herbicides the gmo grow with come from refinery waste you can see her dilemma. Fortunately for me, eating weed killer isn't a financial issue but an ethical one and she can bite me.

The bill is written as a proposed constitutional amendment coauthored by 3 legislators, currently in the Judiciary B Committee, and has no chance of passing. It's just a move to get national attention, and it apparently has.

Over the last few years, this had come up in one form or another.
I'm beginning to think it is just a matter of time before some junk like this goes through.
Anyone recall the planning and zonning in LA sub that wouldn't allow fast food places to be built?
There are people that think that they have the right to make our decisions for us, since we don't appear to be making wise one's for ourselves . . . they really should stop that.
I hope everyone is taking note of the names of these "representatives." They shouldn't be allowed the title, or position. Time for some spring cleaning if you ask me.

Latest update on this: The chairman of the Judiciary B Committee and the Speaker of the House in the state legislature have said that this bill has no chance of passing. The Speaker of the House said that he would shred it if it reached his desk. End of story.
